Janai Purnima – Pokhara

Janai Purnima is a significant Hindu festival celebrated with devotion in Pokhara and across Nepal, especially by Brahmin and Chhetri communities. Observed on the full moon day of the month of Shrawan (July–August), it marks the ritual of changing the sacred thread or Janai, symbolizing spiritual renewal and purity. Early in the morning, devotees bathe in rivers or lakes like Phewa Lake, and receive a new Janai from priests. A protective sacred thread called Doro is also tied on the wrist for blessings and protection. Sisters tie Rakhi to their brothers as a gesture of love and prayer for their well-being. Families gather to enjoy Kwati, a nutritious soup made from nine types of sprouted beans, believed to boost immunity. In Pokhara, Janai Purnima is celebrated with community spirit, ritual bathing, temple visits, and a deep connection to tradition and health.
